cookies for affilliates links

Posted in

HI, i have a question concerning the cookies. If a customer click on the link given by the affiliate but will not buy anything, how long does the plugin track the customer in order to let the affiliate gain the commission? Thanks, Fabio

    Hi Davide,

Yes your thought is correct and once the user deletes the cookie then the affiliate won’t be granted with a referral. This action could indicate that the user chooses to avoid being tracked and is similar to browsing in incognito mode, both decisions being totally accepted and respected.

Even though this action cannot be reverted there always the alternative of promoting and offering affiliates, coupons, a feature provided in Affiliates Pro you currently use, which works regardless of cookies. Each user can apply a promotion coupon on checkout and get a discount which in turn grants a referral to the affiliate whom the coupon is assigned to. You may find the description of coupons for affiliates in our documentation.

    Kind regards,
    George

    Hi Davide,

The cookies are stored in the client’s browser and will be kept there for as long as they are set by the duration I mentioned on my previous reply. In other words if the cookie is there and has a valid value (a valid affiliate id) the affiliate will get a referral.

    Kind regards,
    George

Hi George, so in otherwords if the client delete the cookies in his browser every day for example and makes the order 3 days later the affiliate will not gain the referral? Please clarify this point. Thanks a lot, Davide

Hi Fabio, welcome back to our forum.

The duration of the cookie depends on the setting used for Referral timeout in Affiliates > Settings > Referrals.
Please have a look at the description for the field in the plugin documentation.

      Hi George,
      last question please:
      1) is the cookie managemente based server or client server?
      2) if a customer comes on the website through the affiliate banner and makes the order ok, the affiliate will earn money. But do the plugin recognize the second, third etc orders?
thanks a lot for your support!
      Fabio
