When an affiliate signs up it creates a user with the role subscriber. I want the affilate to be created a user account as a contributor so I can change the redirect url after login and logout.

Hi Sorry to come in on this thread but what is the safest/best role to assign? My affiliates will be unrelated and I don’t want them accessing any data they are not meant to.

“subscriber” is the lowest level. You can see more info in WordPress Roles.

you can setup default role in Settings -> General -> New User Default Role
To login redirect you can use shortcode [affiliates_login_redirect], more info in documentation and for logout redirect see this topic.
