I have “store direct referrals” checked, so when there is a new customer/referral with no affiliate attributed to them, they are assigned to Direct.
What I’d like is for these to automatically be assigned to an owner account, so a new customer/referral without an affiliate is just put under the owner.
Can I accomplish this by editing the Direct user and assigning the user I want? So “Direct has been referred by OwnerUsername”?
Is there another way to accomplish this? Do commissions pass through the Direct user, or do I need to add an attribute with the same paypal account as the owner?

Normally I’d just reassign a user, but in the event of a lot of users coming in quickly, it seems that its just easier to have them automatically assigned to Direct, and make Direct an affiliate of owner. Problem solved.

Yes correct!
Also keep in mind that the Direct referrer is there for reference only, you can’t edit or delete that affiliate. In this case it’s better to re-assign a user to a different affiliate by editing the user’s profile.

Ok, so if a random customer arrives in the shop, with store direct referrals enabled, they are assigned to “direct”.
Otherwise, if they are following an affiliate link, they are assigned to the referring affiliate on first referral, and permanently with Affiliates Permanent enabled.
If this is correct, then I’m good. I can just make “Direct” an affiliate of the site owner if I need to. Thanks!

If in your case it is absolutely necessary to Store direct referrals, then you can edit each one of the new users and set the desired affiliate assigned. Otherwise, if you disable the setting to Store direct referrals, with Affiliates Permanent option to Assign users to the referring affiliate upon first referral. The assignment will be made if no accepted or closed referrals are on record for the user yet.
your unassigned users from now on will be assigned automatically once they get referred by an affiliate.
