File import

Posted in

Hi, I followed your instructions on the file import, however, it is only importing files that don’t have multiple groups. I separated them by comma (,) as suggested, but it’s not working.

Also, your plugin is not compatible with ä ö ü characters, especially when importing. You may want to mention that to international customers before they buy it.

    Hi Martin,

Please check your import file encoding and set it to utf8 if not already set.
Also, send me a copy to george@itthinx.com so I can make a try.
Since you also got issues with non-latin/special characters, make sure that the file also contains such cases.

    Kind regards,
    George

Great response time by George, thank you for the help!

Mac users, here’s what I found: Excel for Mac does not provide UTF-8 encoding for Tab delimited text files, only for csv files. I tried OpenOffice and LibreOffice, but their Mac versions also don’t seem to provide this option. Finally I reverted back to the TextEditor. However, it still seems a cumbersome task, since TextEditor does not show a ‘Save as’ option. Here’s the process I followed. Hopefully somebody else can shed some light on this and provide a more efficient method:

    1. From Excel Mac version save a Tab delimited .txt file
    2. Open the text file in TextEditor and remove all quotation marks ( ” ) with find replace
    3. User shortcut command+shift+s (Save as) which produces a copy, then select “Save…” from the TextEditor File menu
    4. Now select “Unicode (UTF-8) from the Plain Text Encoding pulldown menu and save the file

    That’s it.

Even though this allowed for special characters in Group Names and Descriptions, I still ran into problems with using special characters such as ä ö ü in File names. However, I don’t think that this is related to the plugin, but rather to the server locale, not sure.
