Files giving ‘page not found’ error

Just recently, the multisite that I use Groups and Groups File Access on now gives this error for all files on the sites: This ….com page can’t be found. No webpage was found for the web address: https://….com/?gfid=#

We have quite a number of customers complaining that they can no longer get their files. I am running 2.16.2 of Groups and 2.4.0 of Groups File Access and the File license was repurchased in April so it is valid (Order 30540). It had been working for quite a while before this recent issue.

Thanks for your timely assistance with this.

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for the additional info on your use case, I need to check your information more carefully but this already sounds like an interesting idea.

As for the changelogs, these are located within the plugin’s folder in changelog.txt. The changelog.txt is also accessible from your Dashboard. When a plugin has an update and you click on View version x.x.x details, it will open.

    Kind regards,
    George

    Hi Dave,

That’s great, I’m glad it works for you.

Regarding Wordfence this is obviously a false positive, because even if the plugin or any plugin hasn’t been updated for the last 2 years, it doesn’t make it malicious or unmaintained. When there is nothing new to add to a plugin, there’s no reason to release an update as long as it works with the current version of WP. Perhaps you should check if there’s an option to whitelist some addons in Wordfence and at the same time I’ll keep a note to release an update for Itthinx Updates plugin.

As for the third point, can you provide some more details on this matter? Are you trying to use the same files or the same groups in all MU sites?

    Kind regards,
    George

      George,

All of the sites in the multisite have users that log in to their site with 1 of two permission levels (resident and board). I need to keep all users from one site from having permission on any other site (i.e. I can’t reuse 1 & 2 on another site). The only way I found to accomplish this with each site having its own group file was to assign two different numbers for each site.

For example, the first site uses 1 & 2, the second site uses 3 & 4, etc. Then when user 1 tries to access a page or file from another site, it doesn’t work. The problem is that I then need to add dummy entries to each new site’s group file to hold the places of all of the previous sites.

Here is a snip of one of the sites: https://prnt.sc/TyWjiTutlEon

This site only uses 25 & 26 but I had to add placeholders to get up to 25 in this group file.

It would be a HUGE help if there were one group file for all multisites that I could simply add to and then somehow have them tied to a particular site.

I hope this helps to explain the issue.

Also, where can I find release notes for Groups or File Access? When new releases come out, I like to check what changed so I can look for any possible issues.

      Thanks.

      Dave

    Hi David,

Thanks for providing access to your site, I’ve already run some tests and the issue you have is related to the location of the files.
If you notice the path for each of these files, is the upload path for the main site and it shouldn’t because you are on the third sub-site of your multisite installation.

However, you can follow this process and fix this once you get a full backup of your site db and files:
    1. First go to your sub-site’s Dashboard and under Groups > Files Import, click on Export to get the list of your file entries.
    2. Then go to your server’s file manager and copy each one of the files listed in the Export file(or in Groups > Files)
    from
    /home/customer/www/marcusmgt.com/public_html/wp-content/uploads/groups-file-access/
    to
    /home/customer/www/marcusmgt.com/public_html/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/groups-file-access/
    3. Then go to Groups > Files Import and Import the file you exported in step 1.

Once you’re done with this, you should be able to access your files without problems. However, if further assistance is needed, please let me know.

Regarding Itthinx Updates plugin, you can get the latest version here. This addon is responsible for giving you access to updates and therefore it doesn’t affect the core functionality of the plugins.

    Kind regards,
    George

      George,

Although a bit tedious, your steps worked and all of the documents are available again, so thank you!

The update plugin link you provided is for the same 1.4.0 version. Do you have a newer version that will not cause the Wordfence error of “The Plugin “Itthinx Updates” appears to be abandoned (updated November 7, 2020, tested to WP 10.0.0).”?

Lastly, each site within a multisite has it’s own Groups table. Since the group numbers must be unique for each site to keep users from logging into other sites, I’ve have to create a growing number of dummy entries in each new site’s Groups file to hold the position/number of previous sites. So the first site uses 1 & 2, the next site has dummy entries for 1 & 2 and uses 3 & 4, and so on. A huge improvement for multisites would be to have a single Groups file that is used by all sites.

      Thanks again for your help.

    Hi David,

Thanks for visiting our support forum.
We have already asked for temp admin access to your site and since your users had access to their files until recently, it is also important to find out which/any changes took place recently. For example you might have added a rule in your .htaccess file that blocks access to specific URLs.

Also, during our test session it would be quite useful if you enable WP debugging, so that for anything that goes wrong, entries are logged in wp-content/debug.log file.

    Kind regards,
    George

      George,

I emailed you credentials yesterday along with steps to see the issue. Nothing was changed in the .htaccess or configuration of the sites. Various plugin updates were installed, as it happens almost every day.

I have a number of customers complaining about not being able to access their files for a couple of days now, so help is appreciated.

      Dave
