“Restrict Categories” Addon for Multiple Categories

Posted in

Hi,

We’ve seen a few support topics mentioning fixes for multiple product categories not allowing other users to see the products. Is there any way we can override this functionality on the “Restrict Categories” addon? For example, allow product categories to be set, but then set a group (or, ideally, no group) when to allow anybody to view that product, while still setting the category/categories.

Example topic: https://www.itthinx.com/topic/multiple-categories/

We just hadn’t heard anything recently and would like to know if there are any updates regarding this feature.

Thank you!

    Your welcome Bill.

    Hey Bill,

Yes that’s the best option you can use with an extra category where both/all groups will have access.
If on the other hand any of the groups would be able to see the products, then again it would be a restriction violation which at the moment is avoided.

    Kind regards,
    George

      Hi George,

Thank you for the confirmation, and that makes sense. We’ll move forward with that solution then.

Have a great rest of your week and thank you again for going over this with me!

    Hi Bill, you’re welcome.

According to your description you shouldn’t have an issue with the product visibility, but please correct me if I’ve made a false assumption.
There is one product that belongs to several categories one of which is Brand A. This category is restricted to Brand A group so only the members of this group will be able to see the product on your site.

    Kind regards,
    George

      Hi George,

Thank you for the quick follow-up! I missed a key point in my explanation I believe. If the product has both “Brand A” and “Brand B” categories, this restricts both Brand A and Brand B from seeing the product, rather than allowing both to view it. I understand that the restriction is working correctly since Brand A can’t view the product because they aren’t allowed to view Brand B products (and vice-versa), but I didn’t know if there was a way to change the restrictions from requiring ALL categories to requiring ANY category.

At the moment our workaround is to create a new category and make it so all groups can see that category. Having the product listed directly under both of the brands would still be ideal though, rather than a separate “All Brands” category archive that users would have to visit.

      Thank you again!

    Hi Bill,

Welcome to our support forum and many thanks for using our content restriction plugin.

Can you please describe your use case with some more details? For the product(s) that belong to more than one categories what are the current restrictions you use?

First scenario: Assume that a product that belongs in two different categories and each of these categories is restricted to one group, then in order for your users to be able to see that product they need to be members of all the groups being used for restricting these categories.
    Example
Awesome product belongs to Awesome category and Amazing category.
Awesome category is restricted to Gold group.
Amazing category is restricted to Silver group.
Members of Gold and Silver group will be able to see that product.

Second scenario: Assume that a product belongs in two different categories and only one of these categories is restricted to a group, then the product will be restricted – as it should – when you visit the unrestricted category.
    Example
Awesome product belongs to Awesome category and Amazing category.
Awesome category is restricted to Gold group.
    Amazing category is publicly accessible.
Visitors of Amazing category won’t be able to see Awesome product, or otherwise the product wouldn’t be restricted.

Please let me know if you need further details on how restrictions work or if you use a different setup.

    Kind regards,
    George

      Hi George,

Thank you for the detailed response! We currently have users assigned to branding groups based on which company they belong to. Products are assigned to a “brand” category based on which company sells them (e.g. “Brand A” products can be accessed by the “Brand A” group and show up in that category).

We are wanting some way that we can keep the current implementation of showing products within grouped categories in the store, but also able to override the restriction somehow. So basically a product would be available under all “Brand” categories for organizational purposes, but only visible within a category that a group had access to.

Based on the response, I think it directly conflicts with the second scenario, but I wasn’t sure if there was a workaround, addon, or custom solution that you knew of to implement this.

Thank you very much, and have a great rest of your day!
