Is there a way to send somebody to a specific URL using an affiliate link?
So if I want a link to go to http://authorpa.com/item1, it will go to that URL and not just the home page.

You should have a look at the shortcode [affiliates_url] in the documentation. There are also useful examples there to help you use it properly.
