Visits and Hits

Hello,

today we started a campaign with a specific affiliate. If you go to his stats, he has 151 visits and 293 hits.

But with my own tracking and his click stats from his email-service the target of new visitors is 232.

Why is there this difference?

    In that case, that’s 100% correct. The affiliate registered the day before yesterday. Yesterday morning he started his first action.

    Our own tracking matches exactly with his link clicks in the mails to the landing page. Our own tracking registers the landing of new customers including an affiliate ID and will be extended for purchases etc. later.

    Only your statistic don’t fit at all. How can this happen and how can it be fixed?

      Hello again,
      It would be hard to advise on the matter, since I am not familiar with the tools you’re using to track affiliate activity and the exact mechanisms they use to register a hit. Do you know if this occurs with only a certain affiliate? Also, what happens if you create a test affiliate and try visiting a link of his through a private browser window a predetermined number of times, say, 3?

        Hello Denitsa,

        there’s nothing complicated to understand. The affiliate uses a newsletter provider like Mailchimp. He has a very accurate tracking about how often the affiliate link was clicked inside the emails. And this is very reliable.

        I have written a script that can measure how many impacts there are from an affiliate and other advertising opportunities.

        My values correspond to his values. And AE’s values are different. That means 2 sources that have nothing to do with each other give almost the same results.

        And AE’s evaluation doesn’t match. And that’s a problem. Because if the evaluations of the link clicks from an email provider differ from the evaluations in the affiliate system, the affiliates become suspicious and believe that we are cheating them. Especially if they use campaigns.

        Fortunately, the referrals were all counted correctly, but we need a solution very quickly for AE to reliably count the new visitors for an affiliate.

        So what could be the reason?

          Hi,
          Sorry, I am still unclear about the exact method you use to count the visits in your code or the email tracking. I specifically mentioned that, because with the Affiliates system one or more hits from the same IP on the same day count as one visit. That’s why in my earlier post I suggested cross-referencing the IP from the Affiliates > Traffic section. I also inquired if the records you get from the external tools and the Affiliates Enterprise differ only for one specific affiliate, because the plugin uses cookies to track affiliate activity. Did you manage to test the behaviour like I suggested in my previous reply?

            E-mail tracking works by clicking on the affiliate link in the customer e-mail. These clicks are counted and displayed in the statistics.

            When a new visitor comes to our website, a new database entry is created for this visitor, which is later updated using a cookie. This cookie is unique and reflects the ID of the database entry. With the initial database entry, the affiliate ID is also entered if there is one. Therefore it is very easy to track which new visitor belongs to which affiliate in the system. This data is used later to evaluate who is coming through whom and when events take place that lead to a purchase.

            These two independent values match quite well. This is why we are so irritated that the new visitors have such different numbers via the affiliate system.

              And as far as we have checked, the IP addresses for the database entries are different.

              Hi Bruno,

              Thanks for explaining that further. Based on what you have discussed here, the metrics that you are comparing will not match because the context is different.

              In the Affiliates system, the stats that you see are daily visits based on unique IPs. The hits gather all of the link requests, the visits though will show a single count for each unique visitor during one single day, it doesn’t matter how many times the visitor has clicked a link during that day, it will only count as one. That’s where you get the difference from between what you are using and what the Affiliates system is tracking.

              There’s nothing wrong in either case given what you have explained and that our system does its job as it should, it’s simply stats that won’t compare 1:1.

    Hello,
    Are you viewing stats for the same time period in Affiliates Enterprise, as well as in the external tools you’re using?
    You can see the details about the link traffic under Affiliates > Traffic and check the visitor’s IP address as well as additional information about each hit, so you can cross-reference it if needed.
